Finally, the post I have been waiting to make: leitão! Leitão is a piglet that has been roasted to perfection. I will review the restaurant with supposedly the best leitão there is, Pedro dos Leitões. You have to make a reservation a few days in advance so they can prepare the piggy for you.
We got bread, olives, and butter for an appetizer. The bread was incredibly fresh, and the butter melted right on to it.
It comes with a basic Portuguese salad (lettuce, tomato, onion, carrots, cucumbers, olive oil, and vinegar) and potato chips.
Honestly, I think the salad was undressed and the chips were a bit chewy, but that is how it always is in Portugal.
Now, the good part: the porky pork! Mmm, tasty! The pork was so tender! Sometimes the amount of meat you got for all the work wasn’t good, but it tasted so amazing. The skin was crispy, like pig candy. Because the meat was so so soft, almost like a confit, it needed the crispy contrast of the skin. It also came with a sauce. It was very peppery but not spicy.
We also had a slice of lemon meringue cake. I think it needed more acidity to cut through the fat I just ate. But otherwise, the textures were on point and the meringue was so fluffy and delicious.
I totally recommend having this iconic Portuguese dish if you are close enough (you don’t need to fly from America to Portugal for it even though it is REALLY good)Thank you for reading! MJ,
My mouth is watering ! Those great pictures and your very descriptive words almost make me smell and taste the piggy dinner ! That was quite a treat for you to dine at that restaurant. Did they tell you how they roasted the piglet ? Did you get the feet ? Or the snout ? Everything looked so tasty. You and your mom should make a lemon meringue pie at home. Love your blog. You always have something so interesting to write about…and tasty too ! LG

I don’t know how they roasted it, and we just got precut parts of the pig. Maybe we could make lemon meringue pie sometime! Sounds fun.
