This summer I went to London as my birthday present. We went to Hamilton, my favorite musical, and to Harry Potter Studio Tour London and other fun things.
Before Hamilton, we had the pre-theatre dinner at Stokehouse and I loved it! It had a two or three course option. You can get appetizer and entree or entree and dessert for the two course option or all three with the three course option.
For 15 pounds you can get two courses and for 20 pounds you get 3.
The starters you can choose from if you choose to get one is golden, purple, and white beetroot salad with goats curd or chicken liver pate with toast.
My mom got the salad and I tried it. It was nice and fresh, but to me the goats curd was too pungent. I think that it was a bit bland too.
Before reading on, note that the menu has changed. The menu below is the most current one. The main courses options are slow roasted Cornish lamb belly with salsa verde, Quarter smoked chicken with watercress, Cornish roast rump of beef with watercress and grated horseradish for an extra 5, and finally charred onion tart with kale pesto, tomato and watercress (all of the above served with new potatoes and vegetables).
I got the lamb belly and everything about the meat was good. It had a crispy skin and a flavorful meat with small bits of fat to boost it up even more. The potatoes I wished were a bit crispier, but they are new potatoes so that was how it was supposed to be. The salsa verde was a nice touch with a bit of freshness to add to the meat. I think that the veggies were a bit mushy for my taste and…. I don’t really like vegetables. So overall, the lamb belly was delish!
The two dessert choices were chocolate mousse with honeycomb or apple crumble with ice cream or cream, and since I was sharing this dish with my mom, I gave way and said we could have apple crumble with ice cream.
I regret my choice because the apple crumble was so bland. It had next to no flavor and it desperately needed cinnamon. It overall was okay, but the plain vanilla ice cream was good and creamy.
Overall, I really enjoyed the pre-theatre menu at the Stokehouse and recommend it if you ever want to see a long theatre show and eat before.
